Brett Ratner: More Must Be Done to Fight Bigotry, Prejudice and Anti-Semitism

Ben Silverman and Brett Rather with their ADL awards

Even before it was time to accept the ADL Entertainment Industry Award on Monday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, producer-directorBrett Ratner (Rush Hour, Hercules) bounded onto the stage, interrupting emcee Justin Baldoni, to tell the crowd that the $1 million being raised was not enough.
"I ran up here," said Ratner, "because I realized I'm a very competitive individual and when I asked how much money was raised when Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Mark Burnett were honorees, they said all three of them beat you and Ben Silverman (the evenings other honoree). I'm really friggin' pissed off."
Ratner thanked the crowd for their generosity in attending but then exhorted them to donate even more to support an organization that fights bigotry, prejudice and anti-Semitism, to make it an even bigger evening for the Anti-Defamation League.
"Bigots spread their messages online 24 hours a day," said Ratner. "They tweet, they post it, they YouTube; but if hate is learned it can be unlearned. … The ADL strives to combat the festering of hate. Please do everything you can."
Ratner then returned to his seat until it was actually time for him to accept the award.
In introducing Silverman, who is executive producer of Jane the Virgin on The CW, Baldoni (one of the stars of that show) joked that his boss has promised to match any donation up to $7.50.
Jaime Camil, another Jane the Virgin star, then did the actual introduction of Silverman, who is chairman of Electus and former co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, with other credits including Ugly BettyThe Office and Biggest Loser.
"Ben honors and respects diversity," said Camil. "His leadership in bringing multicultural formats to the entertainment industry is unquestionable. His emphasis on supporting culturally diverse individuals and projects speaks about the respect and consideration he has for all backgrounds and ideologies."
Silverman said when he heard recently about a terrorist incident in which the group ISIS seized an Egyptian naval ship, "I thought about the responsibility we have to take as storytellers and thought leaders because they're taking our words, they're taking our tools and they're throwing them in our face."
"Brett and I recognize the power of our words," added Silverman, "and the power of what we do and the responsibility as parents and the gifts we have been given to tell our stories, … we need to be even more conscious. This is a big organization against hate, and I hate hate and I love love, but I also know we have the power."
Ratner was then introduced by Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. He recalled that Ratner, now 46, became the youngest member of his organization's board of trustees in 2008, at age 39.
"Many people Brett's age grew up with the feeling that fighting anti-Semitism was something the older generation did," said Hier, "but Brett, you are different."
Ratner began his acceptance by singing a Yiddish song taught to him as a child by his great-grandmother when she lived with him and his mother in a Miami Beach apartment. He said that was where he first dreamed of directing movies and learned what it meant to share stories.
"At night my grandparents," said Ratner, "and my great-grandmother and my mother would sit around the table telling stories. This is how I developed my passion for storytelling and for Judaism. I had no idea at the time how truly intertwined those two passions would become."
Ratner said he suffered from ADD as a child and no public school would take him. He instead went to a Jewish school, and then, after being kicked out for kissing a girl (a violation of the conservative group's rules), he moved to Israel where he attended high school while his mother lived on a nearby kibbutz.
"It was in Israel," said Ratner, "where I really began to feel the national pride of being Jewish and being part of a people. It wasn't until I moved to Los Angeles that my two passions came together."
He said when he started making money 15 years ago, he bought a house and invited his grandparents to come live with him. His grandmother was at the dinner but his grandfather has since passed away. With tears in his eyes, Ratner dedicated his award to his grandfather.
"Now my career has taken off," said Ratner. "I'm directing big Hollywood movies and all I want to do is bring my love of movies and the Jewish people together in a big Nazi ass-kicking movie."
He hasn't been able to get that movie off the ground yet, but said he would continue trying.
Ratner thanked his business partner James Packer, who was in the audience, for helping make his dream come true of being able to finance his own movies. In 2012, they formed Ratpac, a company that with Dune Capital and others has invested in Warner Bros. movies includingGravity, American Sniper and The Lego Movie.
"James Packer is not Jewish," said Ratner, "though he actually recently became an Israeli citizen and happens to live next door to [Israeli prime minister] Benjamin Netanyahu [in Tel Aviv]. James, you are now the first non-Jewish Zionist in history."
Packer, a billionaire Australian, divides his time between his home country, the U.S., Asia and Israel.
Ratner said he was most proud of having produced the documentary Night Will Fall last year, which uses footage shot by the British, and director Alfred Hitchcock, in 1945, right after World War II, and documents the tragic story of the Nazi death camps. It currently airs on HBO.
"The answer to anti-Semitism, bigotry and discrimination," added Ratner, "is not in the heavens. It's right here in this room. It's the work of the ADL and all of us who support it."

John Oliver, Amy Schumer, ‘Black Mirror,’ ‘Rectify,’ ‘The Americans’ Among Peabody Winners

John Oliver and Amy Schumer

The 74th annual Peabody Awards will be handed out to a typically eclectic list of entertainment programs, ranging from the ribald “Inside Amy Schumer” to the incisive “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” to lower-profile critical darlings including Channel 4’s “Black Mirror” and SundanceTV’s “Rectify.”
The CW continued its kudos hot streak with “Jane the Virgin” also landing the coveted trophy from the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
FX grabbed two, with “Fargo” and “The Americans” making the cut. SundanceTV was also recognized for miniseries “The Honorable Woman.” HBO got the nod for Steven Soderbergh’s period medical drama “The Knick.”
The Peabody org noted that this year’s entertainment selections featured a high volume of strong roles for women, from Schumer’s unabashedly raunchy comedy to Keri Russell’s icy Soviet spy in “Americans” to Gina Rodriguez’s infectiously charming Jane to “Honorable Woman” Maggie Gyllenhaal in a potboiler set against the backdrop of Mideast politics.
Additional Peabody winners in the news and radio categories will be announced April 20; documentary, public service, kidvid and educational winners will be unveiled April 23.
The kudos will be handed out May 31 in a ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street hosted by “Portlandia” star (and two-time Peabody winner) Fred Armisen.
Here is the Peabody org’s rundown on this year’s winners:
The Americans (FX)
Fox Television Studios and FX Productions
In this ingenious, addictive cliffhanger, Reagan-era Soviet spies – married with children and a seemingly endless supply of wigs — operate out of a lovely 3BR home in a suburb of Washington, D.C. Between their nail-biter missions (and sometimes in the midst of them), the series contemplates duty, honor, parental responsibility, fidelity, both nationalistic and marital, and what it means to be an American.
Black Mirror (Channel 4)
Zeppotron/Channel 4
This cinematically arresting, brilliantly written series from England is an anthology of dark-side tales – dark as a black hole. If its narrative shocks don’t wreck your sleep pattern, its moral conundrums will.
Fargo (FX)
MGM and FX Productions
“Fargo,” the series, boasts the same snow-swept backdrop and dark, deadpan ambience as the Oscar-winning movie but tells a different, more complicated story. Its villain, Billy Bob Thornton’s mischievous, murderous, charismatic Lorne Malvo, is a character worthy of Norse mythology.
The Honorable Woman (Sundance TV)
BBC Worldwide, Drama Republic, Eight Rooks Productions, Sundance Channel
A visually rich, densely-plotted thriller set against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestine conflict, it suggests complexities and age-old vendettas that often escape even the best documentaries, to say nothing of the evening news.
Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central)
Jax Media LLC
Schumer’s wholesome, disarming “Brady Bunch” looks belie and enhance a comic intelligence that’s smart, distinctively female and amiably profane, whether she’s applying it to sketch comedy, stand-up, or person-on-the-street interviews.
Jane the Virgin (The CW)
Eye Productions Inc., CBS Television Studios Inc., Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Electus; RCTV; Poppy Productions.
Immaculately conceived, it’s a smart, self-aware telenovela that knows when and how to wink at itself. Its Latina lead, Gina Rodriguez, is incandescent.
The Knick (Cinemax)
Cinemax Entertainment in association with Ambeg Productions, Anonymous Contend and Extension 765
Graphic, gripping, unapologetically grisly when it has to be, this lavish historical drama masterfully dissects surgical experimentation, doctors’ egos, race relations and socials mores in the New York City of 100 years ago. It gives new meaning to the term “operating theater.”
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
HBO Entertainment in association with Sixteen String Jack Productions and Avalon Television
A most worthy addition to the news-as-comedy genre, “Last Week Tonight” doesn’t just satirize the previous week’s news, it engages in fresh, feisty investigative reports that “real” news programs would do well to emulate.
Rectify (Sundance TV)
Gran Via Productions, Zip Works
A powerful, subtle dramatic series about a death-row inmate freed after nearly two decades thanks to new DNA evidence, it ponders whether what’s been lost can ever be repaid, not just to him but to everyone he and his alleged crimes touched.

Michael: Rogelio's New Brogelio

SCREENS: THE CW

Michael: Rogelio's New Brogelio

Jane's dad and Jane's ex have really hit it off since Rogelio's ride-along, and their friendship is a beautiful thing.

For a man like Rogelio de la Vega, charming -- nay, enrapturing -- women is no challenge at all. He won the heart of a young Xiomara Villanueva years ago, and since then has gone on to ply his charisma on virtually every woman we've seen him interact with, from the ones about whom Santos was passionate on The Passions Of Santos to his ex-wife, to his daughter's grandmother, and finally to the daughter that, after months of working on their nascent relationship after being estranged all her life, is happy to call him "Dad." And while we haven't seen Rogelio make friends or even be especially friendly to very many men, after this week's episode we needn't wonder whether Rogelio's charisma can also target a man: he's made a friend who's a dude! It just might be the wrong dude.
Given the end of Michael's relationship with Jane earlier in the season, Rogelio and Michael haven't really had much cause to interact all season -- but after a humiliating internet meme(which, let's be honest, should have really been caught by a director before it ever made it to air; Rogelio's supposed to be an expert on fictional outer space crime fighting tech now?) moved Rogelio to step up the realism in his performance on his new show by spending time with the only real-life, earthbound police officers he personally knows, Michael and Rogelio took their relationship to a thrilling new level.

...Okay, fine, that was a fantasy sequence of Jane's. But it was based on true events: Rogelio and Michael ended their day together by (to hear Rogelio tell it) solving a case together, and judging by events in this latest episode, Rogelio feels it's bonded them for life. Not only is he comfortable enough with Michael to fully make out with Xo in front of him...

...he's booking them a pedicure together and inviting him to a huge party at the Marbella. They even have their own secret handshake!

But there is a snake in the garden of Michael and Rogelio's beautiful friendship, and its name is Rafael.
Ever since Rafael's failed marriage proposal, the signs have been increasing that Rafael is not the right man for Jane -- or, at least, not the right man for right now. The evidence mounts in this latest episode, between Rafael's unthinking reflex to throw money at problems (to pay for a doula, and later for a nanny), his failure to understand how much of his time, attention, and energy will be required for him to be a decent father when his baby is actually born, and his defensiveness when Jane tries to paint him a picture of what she actually expects in a co-parent. All of that is pretty damning, to a degree that, the narrator tells us, has Jane wondering whether love is enough to make her relationship with Rafael work.
Worse than all of that, though, is that Rafael could look at Michael and Rogelio's friendship and decide it's a threat to him!
Granted, Rogelio has already let it be known to Rafael that he was not pleased that Rafael's (ultimately unsuccessful) proposal was not preceded by Rafael's seeking Rogelio's permission -- a matter Michael didn't have to worry about before he proposed, since Rogelio wasn't in Jane's life at the time, except as, surely, one of her favourite novela stars. But only someone who's insecure with his own standing could see the pure, innocent friendship between Michael and Rogelio and perceive it as a threat. It would probably be pretty easy for Michael to try to manipulate Rogelio for his own purposes if he wanted to: Rogelio is easily led, already impressed by the glamour of Michael's profession, and in awe of his perceptive powers.
But Michael actually is sincere in his friendship with Rogelio for its own sake, not as a means to the end of getting back with Jane, and while I'd like to say that Rafael would be ashamed of his suspicions if he could see Michael and Rogelio getting their spa chair on together, he probably wouldn't because of his own base motives. And the fact that Rafael throws Michael in Jane's face in the middle of a fight to deflect from his inability to be an equal partner in preparing for their daughter's arrival is proof that he can't appreciate true (platonic) love when he sees it modeled by Michael and Rogelio...and therefore maybe isn't capable of it himself? Rogelio shouldn't be fighting Michael's friendship with Rogelio: he should be working on starting his own! But he can't, for the same reason he can't be a good partner to Jane: he doesn't know how to be in a family, and doesn't seem very interested in learning.
On the other hand...Michael named Rogelio a Junior Detective.
If Rafael can't offer Rogelio anything comparable -- AND HE CAN'T -- maybe he's right to give up on Rogelio as a permanently lost cause.
