Jane the Virgin’s Jaime Camil Loves His Cast, Broadway, And Ancient Aliens
Jaime Camil plays the dramatic, charismatic, slightly self-absorbed yet extra-endearing Rogelio De La Vega on the CW’s telenovela-style comedy, Jane the Virgin. Camil, who has starred in many Mexican sitcoms, films and telenovelas, tells Nerdette’s Greta Johnsen why Jane the Virgin is so relatable and how it’s changing the game for people of color on American television.
Greta Johnsen: What is so relatable about a show like Jane the Virgin? You have so many characters who look different from a lot of your audience, but people love this show.
Jaime Camil: This is a show written for human beings, not a certain ethnicity or demographic. And I think that’s the clue for Jane’s success. Gina Rodriguez happens to be Latina, and we happen to be working with a family that has Hispanic heritage, but that's nothing. That’s just a little extra thing that we have on the show.
We could be from Vietnam, we could be from Turkey, from Germany -- the show tells stories about human beings and their struggles, regardless of their ethnicity or demographics.
Johnsen: What do you think Jane the Virgin has done to add dimensions to the portrayal of Latin-American people on TV in the United States?
Camil: A lot. Kudos to Mark Pedowitz, the president of the CW, the network executives, and our producers Ben Silverman and Jennie Urman, because just the fact we’re portrayed as Latinos without having to scream “tacos!” or “fiesta!” in every single line -- just the fact that they portray us as normal people -- normal middle-class America -- is amazing. It’s a win.
Johnsen: Another thing I love about this show is how much it’s addressing the current political climate without being heavy handed about it. It’s still lighthearted and fun, even though you’re dealing with really serious issues around what it's like to be an undocumented person, worrying about Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, for example.
Camil: Yes, I think it's the responsibility of the showrunner to speak out when these things happen. We are not CNN. We are a show on the CW that is meant to entertain people. So we're not going to get that heavy in the political scenario or anything, but we are going to address these issues in the way you would address them over coffee with your friends. So we don’t go that deep into them, but we do address them.
And I think it's important to create some conscience, especially with the political vibe that this country is living right now. There’s a lot going on. And I think it's the responsibility of whoever has the power of communicating to the masses to put out a fair point of view. Like a line Jane had [in a recent episode]: Freedom of speech is not about being comfortable with only the speech that you like. It’s about all kinds of speech, not just the one that favors you.
Johnsen: I’ve heard that you still consider musical theater to really be your home. Is that true?
Camil: Without a doubt. I love being onstage. That’s where I feel the most complete. It’s like fish in water scenario for me.
Johnsen: What about being onstage feels different from being on TV?
Camil: Every single performance is a new performance, so you feed off the audience and your fellow actors and the energy and the vibe and how the orchestra is feeling. It’s a continuous feedback of so many elements that have to come together in the most perfect way in order to give the audience the experience.
They go, they sit, they watch the play, and it's probably going to be the first and only time they see the play. So they deserve your very best every time. And that drive of excellence, I just love that. I love that feeling of being onstage and singing and dancing and acting, and you only have one take.
Johnsen: What homework do you have for Nerdette listeners?
Camil: Please watch Ancient Aliens. Oh my dear god, it’s so good! It’s about the theory that we have been visited by aliens. Many times. And how ancient, ancient aliens -- I’m sorry, you asked me, so I’m going for it! It’s a very interesting show that I am completely addicted to.

Corbin Bleu, Jennifer Nettles, Jaime Camil & More Set for Mamma Mia! at the Hollywood Bowl
My my, how can we resist this casting? A bunch of Broadway alums has been tapped for Mamma Mia! at the Hollywood Bowl, including Corbin Bleu, Jennifer Nettles and Jaime Camil. The three are set to play Sky, Donna and Sam, respectively. Performances of the Kathleen Marshall-helmed production will play from July 28-30. David Holcenberg will conduct.
Dove Cameron (Hairspray Live!) and Lea DeLaria (Orange Is the New Black) will also be featured in the cast as Sophie and Rosie, respectively.
Bleu is best known for appearing in the Emmy Award-winning High School Musical franchise. His Broadway credits include Holiday Inn: The New Irving Berlin Musical, Godspell and In the Heights. He appeared in Hairspray at the Hollywood Bowl in 2011 as Seaweed. Grammy winner and Sugarland frontwoman Jennifer Nettles made her Broadway debut in 2015 as Roxie Hart in Chicago. Camil stars in The CW's Jane the Virgin; he also appeared in Broadway's Chicago in the role of razzle-dazzle story swirler, Billy Flynn. Mamma Mia! is the international phenomenon about a young woman's plot to uncover the identity of her father among three of her mother's former loves, all invited to her wedding on a Greek island. Filled with ABBA's timeless songs, including "Dancing Queen" and "Voulez Vous," Mamma Mia! had audiences singing, dancing and having the time of their life on Broadway for a 14-year run. There are currently national tour productions running in London and in the U.S.

Jaime Camil (‘Jane the Virgin’) teases the season finale: ‘Something’s going to go down’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]
“[Series creator] Jennie Urman was kind enough to call us individually to her office, and she laid out the plan,” says “Jane the Virgin” actor Jaime Camil about the discovery that his co-star Brett Dier was being written off the show. Dier’s character, Michael, was an upstanding police officer and the husband of the title character (Gina Rodriguez) before dying of complications from a gunshot wound. “We were all crying while we were reading it, and then Jennie, who is a brilliant writer and a brilliant leader with so much humanity in her, put together a little video of Michael’s best moments after the table read.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Camil about this and more above.
Camil plays vain telenovela star Rogelio De La Vega. Both the actor and character were rooting for Rogelio’s daughter Jane to end up with Michael, but since Michael’s death he’s had a change of heart. “I think the fans and everybody are expecting Jane to end up with [her son’s father] Rafael,” says Camil. And even Rogelio has come around, bonding with Rafael “first and foremost because he’s very handsome.”
Michael’s death wasn’t the only shocking development so far in season three. That traumatic event was immediately followed by a three-year time jump that Camil felt “made perfect sense.” He argues that accelerating the time line kept the show from being bogged down in grief. “It was a brilliant move to show hints of how it was losing Michael, but then let’s keep the energy and the soul of the show going,” he explains. “Eventually time heals you and then you go back into your normal life.”

Season three also saw the romantic reunion of Rogelio and Jane’s mother Xiomara (Andrea Navedo), who not only found their way back together after a long estrangement but got engaged. “When we read [the engagement scene] Andrea and I looked at each other and went, ‘We’re back baby!’ and we high-fived.” So can we look forward to a wedding in their very-near future? “Who wouldn’t want to see a #RogelioWedding. It’s like a gift we give to the audience,” says Camil, but nothing is ever that simple in the world of “Jane the Virgin.” “We have finished shooting the season so I know exactly what’s going to happen … something’s going to go down in the season finale, and you’ll see it’s going to be very cool.”

JANE THE VIRGIN's Jaime Camil Signs on for MAMMA MIA! at the Hollywood Bowl
Golden Globe, Critics' Choice, Teen Choice nominee, Imagen Award winner and Broadway actor Jaime Camil, of CW's Jane the Virgin, has been announced for the Hollywood Bowl's upcoming production of Mamma Mia!, the 2001 international phenomenon which will be this summer's annual staged musical at the Bowl. Camil will play the role of Sam Carmichael.
Mamma Mia! will be directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall and conducted by David Holcenberg. Filled with ABBA's timeless songs, Mamma Mia! features music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and some songs with Stig Anderson, with book by Catherine Johnson. Mamma Mia! was originally conceived by Judy Craymer. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
Mamma Mia! will have three performances at the Hollywood Bowl this summer - Friday, July 28, at 8 PM, Saturday, July 29, at 8 PM and Sunday, July 30, at 7:30 PM, with single tickets on sale Saturday, May 6.
Jaime Camil, who last summer wrapped a two-month run on Broadway starring as "Billy Flynn" in Chicago, has appeared on stage in West Side Story, Hook, Aladdin, El diluvio que viene and the Broadway-bound musical The Mambo Kings. He began his career as a singer performing alongside Cuban icons Amaury Gutierrez and Pancho Cespedes before going on to star in the mega hit telenovelas Mi Eres Tu and La Fea Mas Bella in his native Mexico. He has starred in award-winning films including Pulling Strings, 200 Cartas (alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda) and 7 Dias, which earned him Best Supporting Actor honors from the Premios ACE and the Mexican Cinema Journalists. Camil's career continued to skyrocket following star turns in the gender-bending comedy Por Ella Soy Eva and the fish-out-of-water romp Que Pobres Tan Ricos. He has recorded four platinum-selling albums.
Director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall is one of Broadway's most celebrated artists. Honored numerous times for her work on stage and screen, she has won three Tony Awards (with six more nominations) and two Drama Desk Awards (four additional nominations). Marshall has also been nominated for both an Olivier and an Emmy.
On Broadway, Marshall directed and choreographed In Transit (2016), Nice Work if You Can Get It (2012), Anything Goes (2011 revival with Sutton Foster), Grease (2007 revival), Pajama Game (2006 revival with Harry Connick, Jr.), Wonderful Town (2003 revival), Little Shop of Horrors (2003), Follies (2001), Ring Round the Moon (1999), 1776 (1997), and Swinging on a Star (1995). She collaborated with her brother, Rob Marshall, on direction and choreography for Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993 with Chita Rivera), She Loves Me (2003 revival), Damn Yankees (1994), Victor/Victoria (1995 with Julie Andrews) and Seussical (2000).
As Artistic Director of "Encores" at Lincoln Center in New York City, she staged musical revivals from 1996 through 2000. Marshall choreographed The Boys from Syracuse, Li'l Abner and Call Me Madam. In addition, she directed and choreographed Babes in Arms and Wonderful Town (transferred to Broadway). Off-Broadway credits include Applause, Girls, 70, Two Gentlemen of Verona, House of Flowers, Carnival, Hair, Saturday Night, Violet, and Du Barry was a Lady.
Conductor David Holcenberg is currently serving as music director of the Tony-nominated musical Groundhog Day on Broadway. His past Broadway shows as music director have included Mamma Mia!, Seussical, Titanic and Show Boat. David also music directed the Los Angeles production of Ragtime (L.A. Drama Critics Award), The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto and the Lincoln Center productions of Dessa Rose and The Glorious Ones. His show Bingo, written with Michael Heitzman and Ilene Reid, is currently playing around the country. David is currently the associate music supervisor for Mamma Mia! in North America.
