With an all-new episode of Jane the Virgin airing tonight (9/8c on the CW!), we caught up with star Jaime Camil about what’s coming up on the hit show, his character’s hilarious telenovela name and whether thetalented singer will be showing off his voice on the hit show!
Tell us about your character “Rogelio de la Vega” (by the way — cool name!).
Right! Super cool name! Sooo TELENOVELA! He’s a world famous telenovela star and lives in a parallel universe! He’s very excited to be a dad but doesn’t know how to {be one}, so obviously he’ll make some mistakes along the way. I think that Rogelio and Jane (Gina Rodriguez) will complement each other and they’ll both learn the father-daughter relationship. Also, Rogelio will be in Xiomara’s (Andrea Navedo) life now! I think they’re meant for each other.
You have a TON of acting credits and you probably get offered tons of roles! What attracted you to the role of “Rogelio” on Jane the Virgin?
I loved the script! It was by far the most creative and well written script of the ones I read. The role is obviously meant to be comic relief, but it also has very beautiful heartfelt scenes with Gina {Rodriguez} and Andrea’s {Navedo} characters. Overall, even though Rogelio is very eccentric and a little over the top, {he} is a grounded character with lovely scenes.
In recent interviews, you’ve said that the crew on Jane the Virgin is a pleasure to work with. Would you say the cast and crew are like one big family?                                                                                                                               Of course! And it’s not because we’re on our first season and we will all become monsters later on! We really love each other and we all understand how blessed we are to have a gig that we enjoy and love. We have an open iMessage chat and we talk to each other every day! We praise each other’s work, we say how much we love each other and how fortunate we are. It’s a very genuine relationship and this love spreads out to our crew, producers and network executives.
You’re also a popular singer. Any chance you’ll sing on the show like Andrea Navedo?

Ha! I don’t know! That’s Jennie’s {Showrunner Jennie Urman} call.
You got a TON of buzz when you guest starred on Devious Maids last year. Any chance you’ll be back for season 3?
I don’t think so. Jane the Virgin is my show and it’s keeping me very busy! I’d love to work with Sabrina Wind again though. She’s my friend and I love her very much!
Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9/8c on the CW!
