I honestly think this is one of the best shows to come out in recent years. Here are some of the reasons why I think it rocks.
1.The show sneaks up on you. You might think that the premise is too silly and your first instinct is to not watch it. Be smart, WATCH IT!
2. Jane’s grandmother only speaks Spanish. If you don’t speak the second most spoken language in the world, don’t worry, there are subtitles. The abuela is played by Ivonne Coll, a Puerto Rican actress whose career started in The Godfather II after being crowned Miss Puerto Rico in 1966 and representing the island in the 1967 Miss Universe pageant.
3. The show pays homage to classic telenovelas. It even has a character that is an overt parody of typical telenovela characters. Expect twists in every episode, backstabbing and the occasional case of amnesia.
4. Anthony Mendez‘s Latin Lover Narrator voiceover is a character on it’s own and the show would not be the same without it. He is the audiences guide and sometimes he himself is surprised by plot twists.
5. Jaime Camil‘s character is over the top dramatic and brings the comedy to the show. If you have ever watched a telenovela, I guarantee you will laugh your heart out with him. Camil’s career started with “La Fea Más Bella”, Mexico’s remake of the Venezuelan telenovela “Betty, la Fea”, which was laso remade by more than 20 countries including the US. You might know it as “Ugly Betty”.
6. Jenna Ortega, young Jane, shows real talent at just 10 years of age. We will surely see her for years to come.
7. The show is run by its women. The relationship between three generations of latin women, represented by Jane, her mother and her grandmother, is the real core of the show.
8. It’s hilarious! But it also has heart and can be downright adorable.
9. Two words: Gina Rodríguez. This year, she won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical. She is funny, smart, and dancer too!
10. Do you REALLY need another reason? Go watch it!
