Emmy Contenders: 'Jane the Virgin's' Jaime Camil teases season finale
Jaime Camil, the scene-stealing father on 'Jane the Virgin,' takes us behind the scenes
Jaime Camil, like the scene-stealing father-telenovela superstar Rogelio de la Vega he plays on the CW's "Jane the Virgin," knows how to promote the projects he's involved in.
The actor stopped by The Times for a video chat on Monday — hours before the dramedy was set to air its season finale. And if fans of the show needed some incentive to tune in, Camil offered it.
"It's going to be full of cliffhangers," he teased. "Full — one after the other one .... If you think that overall the episodes are fast-paced, well wait 'til you see tonight's episode. It's going to be so fast, so many stories to tell, so many turn of events, so many cliffhangers, it's going to be epic."
But we've seen epic — last week's episode featured Rogelio starting rehearsals on his one-night-only Vegas residency, singing a Spanish version of Elvis' "Suspicious Minds." So, naturally, we pressed for more.
"I can tell you this: When it comes to Rogelio and Xiomara [Andrea Navedo], what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," Camil teased.
Cliffhangers can be taken in with some ease given that the show was renewed for a second season months ago.
But in a 30-minute chat with Camil, talking points were far more wide-ranging.
Jane the Virgin Season 1 Review
With the 2014-15 TV season coming to a close, TVOvermind is taking a closer look and reviewing the most recent seasons of some of network TV’s biggest shows. We first examined FOX’s “Gotham.” Next up: The CW’s “Jane the Virgin.”
After falling in love with and having to see brilliant new shows cancelled time and time again over the last few years, I went into this television season only planning on watching two new shows: Selfie and The Flash. While one was tragically cancelled and the other met expectations, neither of these shows ended up being my favorite new show of the 2014-15 season. That spot was reserved for a special show, one that generated a lot of buzz within its first few episodes, causing me to tune in and see what all the hype was about. Right away, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed in Jane the Virgin, as I immediately fell in love with the Villanueva women and the dramedy surrounding Jane, a pregnant virgin. Jane the Virgin started out strong and only got better throughout its freshman season as characters developed and fully embraced the series’ unique format. For once I can say that I fell in love with a show that will be around for a very long time.
Jane the Virgin is a genre in and of itself, so unique in the way it tells stories. Many people cite the narrator as their favorite character, something that would be unheard of on any other show, but Jane the Virgin manages to pull it off seamlessly, as the narrator offers commentary and insight about the going-ons of the characters. This accomplishes a few very important things, the first of which is that it lets us know that the show does not take itself too seriously. While the genre could be described as many things, dramedy seeming most appropriate the majority of the time, there’s no denying the fact that underneath it all there’s a hint of that telenovela charm. After all, the characters are constantly watching telenovelas, and Jane’s father himself is a telenovela star.
Instead of ignoring this essential quality that makes Jane the Virgin so special , the writers embrace it by acknowledging the ridiculous nature of what’s happening. When the narrator makes a sarcastic comment or when Jane and Rafael go through every insane thing that has happened to them since the start of the season, that is the series’ writers acknowledging that they know what’s happening is beyond the realm of reality. Instead of taking away from the dramatic aspect of the show, this adds to the comedy, evening out the two genres that make up this fantastic series.
The heart of Jane the Virgin, the reason why we tune in week after week to see what will happen, is the Villanueva women. Jane, her mother, and her abuela are all huge inspirations for women everywhere, as they face challenge after challenge. As an audience, we’ve cried with them, laughed with them, sympathized with them, and then cried with them a whole lot more, and through every step of the journey, they’ve been there for each other, offering advice or sometimes just a shoulder to lean (or cry) on. The bond between these three women is a strong one, and while they may not always agree on how to live their lives, they will always be there for each other when it matters most.
Of course, no telenovela is complete without a bit of romance, and with romance often comes love triangles, although the term “love triangle” may be a bit too simple for the complicated romantic lives of the characters on Jane the Virgin. Imagine the next few sentences being said in the voice of the narrator: At the beginning of the series, Jane was with Michael, even getting engaged to him early on in the season. Meanwhile, Rafael was married to Petra, ready to have a child with her. But when Jane was accidentally artificially inseminated with Rafael’s sample, things got a bit more complex. Both original relationships fell apart as Jane and Rafael developed feelings for each other, the future parents unable to deny the attraction between them. Like in any good telenovela, their newfound happiness couldn’t last long, with family drama and the pressure from running the hotel catching up to Rafael. With their relationship also falling apart, that left the door open for Michael to find his way back into Jane’s life, hoping to rekindle something.
With the back-and-forth nature of these romantic relationships, fans have taken to deeming themselves either #TeamMichael or #TeamRafael, depending on who they want to see Jane end up with. At the end of the day, I think it’s safe to say that almost every fan is #TeamJane, simply wanting what’s best for the character that has stolen everyone’s heart. While the drama among these four characters has been fun to watch, there’s only so many times they can go back and forth before the audience loses interest. It would benefit the show to pick one pairing and stick with it next season. After all, there will be plenty of other drama to explore next season with baby Mateo having been kidnapped by Sin Rostro in the season finale.
While all of the actors can hold their own comedically, it’s Jaime Camil’s portrayal of Rogelio de la Vega that provides a majority of the laughs in Jane the Virgin. Naturally, most of that comedy comes from his over-dramatic nature as a stereotypical soap opera star, always needing praise and attention. Between his obsessive use of hashtags, his bromance with Michael, and his giant ego, there is never a dull moment when Rogelio is on screen. If the Villanueva women represent the heart of the show, then it’s safe to say that Rogelio represents the humor that can also be found in every episode.
Featuring a cast of incredible actors, exceptional writing, and all around fun, it’s no wonder that Jane the Virgin has made such a big impact in its freshman season. Gina Rodriguez and the show deserve every bit of recognition they’ve received so far, and it’s been a joy to watch this cast so humbly take in all the positive attention. I have no doubt that the show will continue on its quest of excellence next season and am waiting with baited breath to see what will happen to Mateo and the rest of the characters we all love so much.

Llega la virgen a México
Distrito Federal— La serie Jane the Virgin, protagonizada por Gina Rodríguez y el mexicano Jaime Camil, será transmitida en el País por el canal Lifetime en el segundo semestre de este año.
"Ella se ganó el Globo de Oro, está Jaime Camil. Hay dos temporadas ya y es muy divertida", compartió Melisa Quiñoy, senior vicepresidenta de ventas publicitarias para A&E Networks México.
La exitosa comedia, no es la única apuesta de la cadena dentro de su programación, pues alistan todo un día dedicado a la generación millennial con shows de experimentos sociales como Matrimonio a Primera Vista.
"Juntamos a parejas que se ven por primera vez y se casan. Y en la parte digital hay toda una serie de episodios web que narran las primeras 24 horas después de que se casan", agregó la directiva.
Además adquirieron los derechos de transmisión de NCIS: New Orleans, el más reciente spin off de la franquicia, que se verá por el canal A&E, en el cual ya se transmite NCIS: Los Angeles.
"De las series nuevas en Estados Unidos es de las que mayor números ha tenido (tuvo 17.22 millones de espectadores en su estreno, según TVbytheNumbers), saltando de la franquicia de la que es originaria", añadió la directiva.
Pero también History prepara nuevos lanzamientos para complementar su grilla con la segunda edición de Una Idea Para Cambiar la Historia, Boy Toys, Texas Rising y la miniserie Solos, un reality de supervivencia que estrenará a mediados de junio a nivel mundial.
"A estas personas las dejan completamente solas, en una jungla, con una camarita. Ellos se tienen que filmar, pueden llevar 10 cosas de su elección y tienen que sobrevivir. El último que siga es el que gana medio millón de dólares", explicó Quiñoy.
Para el último trimestre del año, llegará a las pantallas El Jesuita, un programa especial basado en la única biografía autorizada del Papa Francisco.
A&E Networks y E! Entertainment Television inauguraron sus primeras oficinas en México para tener mayor representación en uno de los mercados más importantes de Latinoamérica.
Por el lado de E!, el canal estrenará el 23 de junio su primera serie de ficción The Royals, protagonizada por Elizabeth Hurley, en la que narran la vida de una ficticia Familia Real Británica.
"Estamos súper ansiosos de que llegue la fecha porque es una propiedad increíble y espectacular, que ya tiene una segunda temporada.
"Estrenar una serie que ya tiene una segunda temporada confirmada es una apuesta a algo bastante seguro", dijo Daniela Chaparro, vicepresidenta de marketing del canal.
La cadena también espera lanzar en México Younger, su primera comedia de ficción protagonizada por Hilary Duff.
"Trata de una profesional que vive en Nueva York que se divorcia, se tiene que ir de su casa, su hija se va a la universidad y de pronto se encuentra con qué hará con su vida.
"Cuando busca nuevamente trabajo se da cuenta que tiene que hacerse pasar por alguien más joven y empieza a ver cómo se hace una cuenta en Instagram, Twitter, porque el trabajo se lo exige", compartió Chaparro.

Jane the virgin" tendrá su versión española

La famosa serie venezolana, y que ha tenido mucho éxito con su versión estadounidense, también será adaptada para la televisión española.
La ficción venezolana "Juana la virgen", la exitosa serie sobre una adolescente virgen de origen humilde que es inseminada por equivocación, y que Estados Unidos llevó también a la pequeña pantalla con el título de "Jane the Virgin", tendrá su versión en España.
La serie original, creada y dirigida por Perla Farías en 2002 y con guión de Irene Calcaño, Cristina Policastro, Basilio Álvarez y Germán Aponte, se alza como la tercera telenovela más exitosa producida en Venezuela tras "Kassandra" (1992) y "Mi gorda bella" (2002).
En su adaptación en Estados Unidos, la serie ha sido renovada para una segunda temporada y una de sus actrices, Gina Rodriguez, fue galardonada con el Globo de Oro a la mejor actriz de comedia o musical por su trabajo en "Jane the Virgin".
Ahora, Mediaset realizará una adaptación para España de "Juana la virgen", que narra la historia de Juana Pérez, una adolescente de 18 años y clase humilde que evita los escarceos amorosos y se mantiene virgen para alcanzar un futuro mejor.
Sin embargo, pocos meses después de su visita al ginecólogo, descubre que está embarazada, y tendrá que enfrentarse al desprecio de parte de la sociedad y al fanatismo de otros que la consideran la reencarnación de la Virgen. EFE

Estreno de Los árboles mueren de pie, película con Adriana Louvier y Jaime Camil
El gran estreno de "Los árboles mueren de pie", nueva película protagonizada por Adriana Louvier y Jaime Camil, será en septiembre.

Después de una larga espera, la cinta “Los árboles mueren de pie” que protagoniza Adriana Louvier y Jaime Camil, tendrá su estreno en septiembre próximo a nivel nacional.
En entrevista, la actriz Adriana Louvier, quien recientemente concluyó su trabajo en la telenovela “Yo no creo en los hombres”, reveló que será el 18 de septiembre cuando la película dirigida por Roberto Girault llegue a las salas de cine.
“Estaré un mes fuera de México, tomando un descanso pero regresaré para hacer la promoción de esta cinta que me parece que tiene una gran historia, que por momentos es como un lindo cuento”, explicó la actriz.
Destacó que a pesar de que no ha visto la cinta completa, está satisfecha con el resultado de la historia que tiene sus momentos de drama, pero también hay puntos de su narración que hará que el público la goce.
“El arte y la fotografía están muy bien cuidados”, dijo Louvier, al puntualizar que a finales de junio se realizará una proyección en Campeche, en la que estará presente, junto con parte del elenco.
